I'm almost 20 and while I've had about every other kind of alcohol under the sun, I'd never had a beer. Well I just had beer for the first time. It was like drinking sour bread water, the actual taste was really sour however the aftertaste was pretty good.

I didn't like beer when I first tried it. What beer was it?

Heineken?

I'm drinking a Belgian pilsner right now and it's absolutely wonderful. What kind of beer did you have?

I loved my very first beer.

He said it wasn't Heineken, but "sour bread water" is a pretty good description of that beer. It's terrible.

German beers can be sour...try a Belgian Ale next time. :)

I'm drinking a Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale at the moment.

Hacker-Pschorr? Weisse biers can be a bit sour to the uninitiated.
Also, Heineken is Dutch.

Sounds interesting. But I'm very much a pilsener/lager guy. I'm drinking Martens Belgian Pilsener in .5l cans. It's not the greatest, but I particularly like the .5l can, as long as you pour it into a glass that will hold it all. Bitburger makes a similar sized can that is my top favorite, and I discovered Pilsner Urquell in .5l cans at my local liquor store. The Martens is at my local convenience store, so that's what I buy.

Yeah, I'm not big on pils, I'm a stout man. But, I do rather like Belgian Triples.

Was it Hacker-Pschorr?

Try and find a Blonde Ale or a Hefeweizen. Nice starter tastes, not to strong, more mellow.

not all beers taste the same. presuming you have one, your best bet is to go to a local brewery and try a sampler. stouts aren't like porters aren't like IPAs aren't like Pale Ales aren't like Reds aren't like Ambers aren't like european wheat beers, etc. but if you give them all a try, you might find something you love.

I think I only drank beers once in my freshman year of college. Almost all of our drinking was done with Bacardi 151. I'm recommend you try it but I cant. The only reason to drink that stuff is if you want to get shittastically drunk.....

You being not 21 makes the usual "go buy X" beer recommends harder. They have to be formulated "convince somebody you know to try X and give you a taste". Hence, the "convince Alex to try weird shit" coefficient is waaaaay lower than it should be.

Well, that explains a lot, Hohegaarden is a witbier (white beer), definitely an acquired taste.
A Belgian Style ale that's very pale and cloudy in appearance due to it being unfiltered and the high level of wheat, and sometimes oats, that's used in the mash. Always spiced, generally with coriander, orange peel and other oddball spices or herbs in the back ground. The crispness and slight twang comes from the wheat and the lively level of carbonation. This is one style that many brewers in the US have taken a liking to and have done a very good job of staying to style. Sometimes served with a lemon, but if you truly want to enjoy the untainted subtleties of this style you'll ask for yours without one. Often referred to as "white beers" (witbieren) due to the cloudiness / yeast in suspension.

You picked a great beer to start with, it's one of my favorites. It's not German though, it's from Belgium.

Hoegaarden is actually from Belgium...but that's a good first beer to have. You should try it with a slice of orange next time, it will taste better.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with Hoegaarden myself. It's an... acquired taste, to put it politely.
Mind you, I'm more of a 'real ale' sort of drinker

In my misspent youth I once worked in a liquor store (fun job for an 18 year old). One slow Monday night the night manager was restocking and inventorying the shelves and nioked a pint of 151 off the shelf. She asked me to go get the mop bucket and I returned about two minutes laterwith a broom for the broken glass and a mop and bucket for the rum.
The floor was made up of this greyish-tan nondescript linoleum you probably see all the time in stores and and government buildings and what not. Ugly, cheap and pretty much indestructible. That 151 not only stripped the wax off the floor but also etched (ate into) the linoleum! A year later you could still see where that stuff had been spilled.
I have done my best to avoid that stuff ever since. I have to wonder how many kids that drank that stuff heavily in college find themselves with mysterious stomach problems later in life.

We would typically start off with a shot, chased with a mixed drink. 10 yrs later, my wife says I should go to the doctors because my farts smell so bad. I dont know if its related to the 151 or not but thats how it goes. Other than that my stomach is bomb proof. I eat pretty much whatever I want. This will include a 1 pound cheeseburger with jalapenos just before a mountain bike ride.

You were celebrating the Tesla T-Shirt thing, weren't you?
I'm sure you've been told this before, but you have to develop a taste for it. But, if it's of any comfort, with practice, you will (speaking from experience). Or, you may never be a "beer drinker" but enjoy the occasional beer. Not sure were you're located, but most microbreweries that have a restaurant attached, will offer a sampler (basically 6 to 8 small glasses of beer) which allows you to try their different kinds - something to consider.
But know that if you become an "officionado" and start pining about "subtle hints of strawberry" and other such bullshit, your friends will line up and punch you squarely in the cock. So be warned.
Enjoy!

Only did a couple of shots of 151 in my life, and a handful of sticky, complicated Polynesian-themed drinks that used 151 as a fuel source. The thing I remember most about the 151 is that as soon as it hits your mouth, you can feel the vapors expand. But that's about all I remember from the experience.
